The Awakening

It is that pivotal moment in your life when you have that light bulb moment and you are instantly blinded by the truth:

YOU and YOU ALONE are responsible for your own happiness.

When navigating through particularly rough waters you may find yourself surprised and perhaps deeply hurt by those in your life who you believe may have “abandoned ship”.  Do not take this as a negative, accept this as an opportunity for growth and honor that it is time for you to stand at the helm.  Do not judge those around you who do not seem to understand your situation or where you are at in your life, they have not walked in your shoes and you should not have the expectation that they can comprehend your thoughts and emotions.  It really does come down to whether or not you yourself understand where you are at.

What does it mean to be responsible for your own happiness?  Think about that for a moment.  What does that really mean?  In my opinion it means that when  you open your eyes in the morning you alone choose how you are going to spend your day.  Even if the earth is caving in around you, it is YOU who determines how you are going to handle that moment.  When negative or hurtful words are spoken it is your choice whether or not you allow them to brand the core of your existence or feel compassion for the person who spoke them.  It really does come down to changing your thinking.  When something negative happens during your day it is about making a conscious decision about how you will let that affect you.

I have said it before and it always comes back to letting go.  I spent the majority of my life in “crisis mode”, always waiting for the next negative event to occur, as I was guaranteed it would.  There was no one in my life that taught me how to deal with life stressors, I just dealt with them.  People around me would say, “I don’t know how you do it.” Honestly, I didn’t know how I did it either, I just did what I had to do at the time.  However recently, I will admit, I hit the wall.  The majority of my life spent in crisis mode dealing with routine high stress and I realized that my coping skills had packed their bags and ran out the door, much like I wanted to do.  It was in that moment that I realized I had to go back to my own advice…  I alone am responsible for my own happiness and in order to gain better perspective I need to change my thinking from negative to positive.

There is no magic wand in finding happiness, it is a state of mind.  Once you have that awakening, that understanding you will find more happiness in everyday life no matter what your obstacles are.

We all have life. The question; What will you do with yours? You make the point, with specificity. One key word makes the question, and answer to your life, complete: you.
Do nothing, it runs haphazardly. Do something, and it will run according to the laws of the Universe. You are in charge of the doing.
    Good post, thanks!

Dave, I am so glad to see you here. : )
If there is anything that I have learned in life it is that I am solely responsible for my own self. That realization requires letting go of the anger and blame and accepting the responsibility for my own happiness. Challenging yes, but over time I am finding my way.
    Thank you for stopping by!

You have found the answer, Beth.

I had lots of roadblocks in life, I think we all do. I got so frustrated when people would comment on my “strength” or “bravery” really, what choice do you have? Either survive or not, right? Nothing strong or brave about it.

Once we realize that we or in control of our own happiness, life becomes better and happier, doesn’t it?

This is why I look forward to sharing silliness with you online. It makes a really happy day, no matter how crappy a day it is.

  4. Great post, as well as inspiring. As a member of weight watchers, at age 11, to yo yo diets and weight fluctuations from 125 to 215 until now it’s a bitch.
Being bi-polar doesn’t help, nor a few other personal other road blocks. It IS the days when I force myself to take that minute in the morning to be positive that all goes much better.
Have always been a believer that we all have responsibility for our own decisions and actions. Blaming outside forces is ridiculous. As the 12 Step saying says One Day At A Time.
Many days it’s One Minute at a time heh.
Even then, making my own mistakes just kicks up the self-loathing. So I do blame…. myself.
It’s difficult to follow my own advice a lot of times: NO ONE is as hard on you as you are on yourself.

This post made me feel good Beth. Thank you so much 🙂
Just knowing that there are others out there is helpful.
Be well and keep on smiling!
